What Is a Double Decker Exhibition Stall?

A two-level exhibition stall is a stall that is designed to be double decked so that the exhibitors can use both their available floor space and vertical space and effectively use their exhibition space as it is doubled. The ground floor is usually used to display products, communicate the brand message or interact with the visitors, whereas the upper level is a private meeting room, or a lounge, or a VIP area. Exhibitors are particularly fond of this format as it allows them to achieve the highest possible impact regardless of the size of the floor available to them. In addition to space efficiency, the elevated structure is an attraction in itself, which assists brands to cut through the sea of the exhibition floor. This format is the initial step in understanding that exhibitors are considering hiring a double decker booth design service to their next event.

Cost Considerations Of The Double-Decker Stall Design

There are a number of determining factors that affect the total investment in the case of a double decker stall.

  • Structural Complexity - two tier builds involve more engineering considerations than single levels stalls.
  • Selection of Materials - balancing the strength, durability and appearance of both floors.
  • Stall Size- bigger footprint entails more construction and design efforts.
  • Customization — specifics such as staircase design, the type of railing, or upper-floor finishing will be included in the scope.
  • Branding and Finishing Elements- the degree of branding integration and design detailing of both levels.

Knowledge of these factors assists exhibitors to plan better in case they want to think of a double decker format at their next exhibition.

We have experience in working in different exhibition forms and are therefore a reliable collaborator of ambitious and high-impact stall design.

Structural and Safety of Double Decker Stalls

The construction of a two-level stall has both technical and safety demands that far exceed the normal single-level stall building.

  • Load-Bearing Design - it is necessary to know that the structure is able to support the weight of the upper floor, fixtures, and visitor footfall.
  • Staircase Placement - safe and convenient location of staircases without hindering the flow of stalls.
  • Railing Safety - fitting the top floor with railings that meet the requirements.
  • Structural Stability Tests - testing the stability of the stall when it is expected to be used.
  • Material Strength - it is necessary to select materials that are able to support the structure of a two-level build.

All these are incorporated in each project starting with the design of that project making sure that the end product is as safe as it is aesthetically pleasing.

Two Storey Booth Design

Two Story Booths Design provides exhibitors a solution that allows them to build upwards in case of limited or expensive floor space. Our mezzanine booth design approach focuses on making a smooth transition between the ground and upper floors, structurally and aesthetically. The two-storey format is well thought out so that it does not feel discontinuous but rather a continuous brand experience between the two floors. This design is specifically useful when exhibitors would like to integrate public-facing exhibits with more intimate, upper-level interactions. It can be known as a two-storey format or a double decker, but the principle remains the same — making the most of space and impact within the exhibition footprint.

Plan of Ground Floor and Upper Floor Layout

Space allocation and utilization in both levels is important in designing effective double decker stalls.

  • Use on Ground Floor - generally used to display products, brand message and general interaction with the visitors.
  • Upper Floor Usage - usually a personal meeting space or hospitality lounge or VIP interaction space.
  • Flow Between Levels - staircases and transitions that are intended to ensure a seamless visitor experience.
  • Visibility Balance - to make both levels play a part in the overall visual effect of the stall.
  • Functional Zoning - dividing the space of interactions with people and the space of business negotiations.

Such a layout planning will make the two floors collaborate as a single stall, instead of two, unrelated parts.

Double Decker Stalls for Branding & Visibility Impact

The higher design of a two decker stall is more appealing to the eye than a normal single level arrangement particularly in huge and congested exhibition halls. Height enables branding aspects such as logos, signage, and structural design to be seen at a further distance and at various angles throughout the venue. This increased exposure frequently is converted into improved brand remembrance among the visitors to a crowded show floor. In addition to aesthetics, the format can be used to imply scale and investment, making the brands reputable and serious players in their industry. A double decker stall is a better branding opportunity to exhibitors who value visibility and functionality more than traditional formats.

Design of Stalls in Various Industries

Doubledecker stalls are especially fit to industries that are interested in integrating both public display and the upper-level engagement spaces.

  • Automotive - ground floor car showcase with meeting lounges on the upper floors.
  • Real Estate — model exhibits and brochures below, and private consultation areas above.
  • Technology & IT - on-site product demos, executive meeting options are both available, on the ground and upstairs.
  • Banking & Finance — service desks accessible to the public on the lower floor, and client discussions in the upper level.
  • Luxury & Premium Brands — high-end design enhancing brand exclusivity and luxury.

Such flexibility allows the application of the concept of double decker stalls in industries where both visibility and intimate interaction are equally important.

With a combination of architectural experience and experience in specific designs related to our exhibition, we are confident that all the double decker stalls will act appropriately when it comes to live events. We collaborate with customers to make every design choice such as the location of the staircase or how the upper floor is used fit their brand and their exhibition objectives. This agency-type approach implies that the clients get strategic input, rather than a completed structural plan. This mix of technical, and design planning is what will make our agency unique to exhibitors who might want to use a double decker format.

Feasibility & Approvals

All double decker projects must go through a comprehensive double decker booth feasibility assessment and approval process before construction commences, ensuring alignment with venue and safety requirements.

  • Double decker booth feasibility checks confirm height limitations of the venue, floor load-bearing capacity, and overall structural viability
  • A detailed double decker stand structural drawing is prepared for review by venue authorities and structural engineers
  • Designs are aligned with applicable double decker booth regulations set by exhibition venues and local authorities
  • Coordination with venue management to secure permissions well ahead of the event date
  • Structural sign-off obtained before fabrication begins, eliminating last-minute compliance issues

Two-tier stall is a special set of challenges that can be only managed successfully with experienced planning.

  • Space Constraints - to make the most out of a small footprint on the floor and still be comfortable moving around on both floors.
  • Structural Complexity - to make sure that the design can sustain the additional weight and load requirements of a two level structure.
  • Venue Height Restrictions — working within venue-specific height limits that can impact overall stall design
  • Approval Delays- maneuvering through structural approvals and regulatory sign-offs in the time pressed exhibition schedules.
  • Striking a Balance between Design and Compliance - finding a way to make the stall more attractive and at the same time meet the needs of both safety and regulatory standards.

By taking these challenges on board early using a well-tuned planning and designing can be used to see to it that a double decker stall project is smooth, compliant, and effective.

What a double decker
design package contains

Four of these eight items do not appear on a single storey project at all. They are the reason two storey design costs more per square metre, and the reason a build gets approved rather than refused.

01
Feasibility assessment

Whether two storeys makes sense for your footprint, venue and budget — before any drawing starts.

02
3D concept, both levels

Rendered from the aisle and from the upper deck looking down, because both views sell the stand.

03
Floor plans, ground and upper

Two plans drawn to scale, with the staircase footprint shown honestly against your usable area.

04
Structural drawings

Frame, deck, connections and staircase, drawn to the standard your venue’s engineer will assess.

05
Load calculations

Live load for the upper deck to the venue’s stated kN/m², stamped by a qualified engineer.

06
Venue submission

Filed with the organiser inside their window, tracked, and chased until written approval arrives.

07
Fire & egress compliance

Staircase width, headroom, handrails, occupancy limit and escape route checked against the manual.

08
Certificates for site

The pack your supervisor hands the venue inspector on build-up morning, so nothing stops the build.

Worked backwards from the
approval deadline.

On a single storey stand the immovable date is build-up. On a double decker it is the organiser’s structural submission deadline, which falls six to ten weeks earlier and does not move.

Week 1
Feasibility
Footprint, hall height, venue permission and budget tested before a single line is drawn.
Weeks 2–3
Concept
Both floor plans and 3D views from the aisle and the upper deck, with the staircase shown honestly.
Week 4
Design freeze
Structure locked. After this the engineering package is drawn against it and changes get expensive.
Weeks 5–6
Engineering
Structural drawings and load calculations produced and stamped by a qualified engineer.
Week 6–7
Submission
Filed with the organiser inside their window, then chased until written approval is in hand.
Then
Build
Only once approval is confirmed does fabrication start. Building before that is a gamble we do not take.

What a second
storey actually adds.

A double decker costs more than a single storey stand of the same footprint, and the increase is not only structural. These are the five lines that change.

Variable What it changes How to reduce it
Structural frame The deck and its supports are engineered rather than assembled. Heavier materials, more connections, more weight to ship. Nothing safely. This is the cost of putting people above the ground.
Engineering & certification Structural drawings and stamped load calculations from a qualified engineer, per venue and per edition of the show. Reuse the certified design across shows where the venue accepts it.
Organiser charges Most venues levy a fee for two storey builds, often calculated on upper deck area, plus a structural review charge. Fixed by the venue. Budget for it at feasibility stage rather than being surprised.
Build-up time Two storey stands take longer to erect, sometimes requiring an early access day and extra crew. Book early access at the same time as the space, not afterwards.
Lost ground floor A staircase consumes four to six square metres of the level that faces the aisle — the most valuable area you have. A mezzanine over part of the footprint needs a smaller stair and less structure.
How early do we need to start?

Earlier than you would for a single storey stand, and the reason is the structural submission deadline rather than production time.

Most venues close their two storey submission window six to ten weeks before build-up. Working backwards from that — engineering takes about two weeks, design freeze must precede it, and concept and feasibility need three weeks before that — a comfortable start is sixteen to eighteen weeks before the show opens.

If you are inside twelve weeks, tell us anyway. Sometimes a mezzanine rather than a full deck, or a venue with a shorter window, still makes it work. If it does not, we would rather design you an excellent single storey stand than miss a submission and leave you with crates in the hall.

(FAQs) Frequently Asked

Questions

Everything exhibitors ask us before they commit — including the questions where the honest answer is that we are not the right supplier for you.

A double decker exhibition stall is a two level space which enables the exhibitors to use both the floor area and the vertical space, thus increasing the usable exhibition space by a factor of two.

Product displays, brand messages and interaction with the visitors is done at the ground floor and the upper floor is used as a private meeting space, lounge or a VIP space.

Some of the main factors are design of the load bearing, location of the stairs, railing security and the structural stability inspection to make sure that the stall will support the top floor and the flow of visitor foot traffic.

The height of the venues and their heavy load capacity should be checked by carrying out a feasibility test as well as a structural drawing should be checked and signed by the owners of the venues before fabrication commences.

The overall design and planning process is affected by structural complexity, material selection, size of stalls, and customization level in both floors.

It is reliant on the height limitations and rules of the venue, and this is the reason why a feasibility check is done early enough to ensure the format fits in a certain venue.
